Pool Chemicals Maintain Healthy Water

By Rhea Solomon

Few people have the advantage of lounging in cool waters during the summer blaze; even fewer know what responsibilities go into the ownership of a swimming area. Such luxuries come with their own expenses. Owning a closed in body of water means performing regular maintenance such as applications of pool chemicals, higher water and electric bills, as well as tools of the trade.

Even with the least amount of maintenance, there are substantial costs in owning a pool. Some people fill and flush their swimming area every year with the use of their filter and pump system. This raises utilities substantially. Some of these practices help keep the water clean and safe for swimming.

The majority of heavy debris that may cause a degree of clutter is either sifted out by hand with a mesh scoop, or lifted out by the filter system. Anything from dust, leaves, pine needles, pollen, and insects could accumulate in your swimming area.

When taking care of a pool, it isn't the large debris that homeowners or maintenance workers have to worry about. The real aggressors are imperceptible to the human eye. Tiny bacteria can thrive inside closed water sources and breed disease inside their ecosystem. Microorganisms can do a lot of damage to the area they inhabit. But it's swimmers that are in the most danger or becoming sick in their presence.

Taking care of bacteria in the water requires special chemicals that can be bought in local pool and hardware stores or any large supermarket. Chlorine and bromine are two of the most common chemicals used to treat pools with. Chlorine is easily acquired and most prevalent in pool treatment.

Chlorine and bromine are the most prevalently used chemicals in water clean-up. They can come in liquid, powder, or solid form which will dissolve in the water and react in such a way that bacteria is destroyed. The reaction causes enzymes to break up the bacteria cell walls and structures by oxidizing them.

Chlorine and bromine are not stable on their own and require an additional chemical to keep them fresh and active in the water for much longer. It is important to know what you need and how much of it to place in order to get the desired effect. Regular shock treatments are not unheard of, these treatments are heavy doses of chemical that are added to the water when there has been extra activity or influence from the environment. The purpose of shocking your swimming area is to keep it clean.

Taking care to read the instructions on the chemical label is always advised. Not only will the container provide the dosage necessary per gallons of water, but they will instruct the caretaker on the testing of the water. Caution is recommended when using any kind of chemical. Chlorine can be harmful to the skin if it is spilled or used in high quantity. The disposal of the containers is also a sensitive issue. Pool chemicals should be used up in their entirety before the container is thrown away so as not to infect the environment or local wildlife.
